At some point you look back and you realize there’re a lot of things you wish you had known or someone had told you. Turning 18 was a real page-turner for me because I learnt that there were a lot of things I wish I knew before I was 18 which could have really helped me.
Here are 10 things I wish I knew before turning 18;
1. BE SMART WITH YOUR MONEY
Knowing the difference between your wants and needs. It’s okay to get nice things you want every now and again, but prioritizing your needs and saving comes first.
2. NOT EVERYONE IS YOUR FRIEND
I don’t really socialize much so the only friends I had were at school. It was nice having people to call friends and there were some I really thought I could trust. Keyword- THOUGHT. Just because they hang and laugh around you doesn’t mean they are there for you. Just because they got your back doesn’t mean they won’t stab you in it?.
3. DON’T CHANGE YOURSELF FOR ANYONE.
You know that point where you’ll want to change yourself just to fit in, don’t EVER do that. Honestly. If no one likes the real you, then let them go.
4. YOU WILL MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE BUT NOT EVERYONE WILL STAY.
You’d meet a lot of people as a teenager but not everyone will stay. Making friends won’t be easy, especially finding the consistent ones. learnt that the hard way. I hated losing friends but I knew there was a reason they left. So don’t sweat it.
5. FEELING DOWN, SAD OR DEPRESSED, TALK TO SOMEONE
Honestly it really helps. Talk to someone, maybe a stranger, someone close to you or anyone. I wish someone had told me this, maybe I wouldn’t have a problem opening up.
6. STOP CARING SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE THINKS.
I honestly think if I had learnt that earlier before turning 18, it would have helped my life a lot. I used to think a lot about what people say about me. Oh lord, they’ve said a lot of stuff about me even I didn’t know about myself. It used to bother me a lot but now I could care less.
7. PEOPLE WILL HURT YOU.
I knew this before I even turned 16 but I had no idea it would be as worse as it is now. Going to university will teach you a lot of things. It’s an eye opener. But the main thing is don’t stoop down to their level. They will break you but don’t be like them.
8. DON’T LET YOUR HAPPINESS DEPEND ON SOMEONE ELSE.
Of course I learnt this the hard way. You’re the only one who can truly take care of yourself, it might take time but your happiness depends on you. Don’t rely on anyone.
9. CONFIDENCE IS EVERYTHING.
The secret to self-confidence is to stop caring what people think, it’s to start caring about what you think. It’s to make your opinion of you more importance than anyone else’s.
P.S. Confidence is sexy.
10. IT’S OKAY TO CRY.
At some point, the only thing that would feel really good is to just cry. Let it out, it’s okay to cry.
What do you wish you knew at 18 that you know now?
